Waterproofing your Bathroom
by Sam McAusland (July 2013)

Making your bathroom water tight is very important when installing a new bathroom suite. There are products out there that will give your bath/shower tray that extra waterproof seal that will stop water escaping and causing potential problems.

On all of our bathroom installations we recommend using an aqua-strap around the bath/tray and a waterproofing kit for the walls. I will explain a little more about these below.

Aquastrap

An aqua-strap is a rubber strap with an up-stand that is stuck on the outside wall of a shower tray or bath. When the tray or bath is pushed against the wall the strap gives a 100% waterproof seal between the tray/bath and the wall. The PDF link below shows how an aqua-strap is installed.

Shower Tight Kit

Moisture escaping through tiles and to the wall behind can cause all sorts of problems. As i found out at my own home a crack in the grout can cause water to escape and cause damp patches on the wall behind. On new bathroom installations we recommend using a shower tight kit to give walls a waterproof membrane and stop any potential water escaping through tiles and to damaging the walls behind.

The system consists of a surface primer, a grey flexible waterproof coating and a super strong polyester matting to reinforce seams in joints around wall floor junctions. This seamless, protective membrane inhibits the passage of moisture from within the tiled area through to surfaces and structures which may be sensitive to the effects of prolonged water migration.

We stock both these products and they come highly recommended by our bathroom fitters.
